What happens in the initial explorative consultation?
I offer a free mini meeting prior to booking a consultation. This is an optional phone or video call, but provides a little time and space to meet and see if you feel you would like to book in. You can contact me by phone 07.57.09.88.69 or via email: eliseannmartin@gmail.com to schedule this free chat or an initial explorative consultation.
In the initial 60 minute consultation you will have the opportunity to ask any questions that you have about me or the way I work, and to let me know about what brings you to consider therapy in this moment of your life. We will take some time to discuss your hoped for outcomes and a theme or piece of work we may focus on. I will then provide indicated next steps and therapeutic recommendations.
And if I want to continue after the first meeting?
If you decide that the time is right to embark on therapy and you feel comfortable working with me as a practitioner, we will establish the frequency of our meetings.
Most clients choose to come weekly, however some will choose to come bi-weekly or fortnightly. We will agree a focus of the therapy together. After a certain number of sessions we will review our work together to consider what is (and what is not) working, emerging issues, needs and indicated themes and directions.
This review will clarify both your needs and the modalities suited to facilitating further work and give you the opportunity to clarify your original goals and review if our work together is supportive and effective. We can then either continue to work to a set number of sessions or on an open-ended basis, or choose to conclude our work together if it seems you would be better served by a different modality or practitioner.
How many sessions for individual therapy?
This very much depends on what it is you want. I work with clients for varying lengths of time, offering shorter, solution focused therapy and longer term therapy. The Safe and Sound Protocol is an engagement of 5 SSP sessions, with an introductory and concluding session on either side. Equine therapy and coaching can be used effectively as both a short term and long term therapy. Sometimes between 6-12 sessions can have a deep impact. Other issues, such as addiction recovery & trauma stabilization and healing will typically need longer, so that a foundation of interpersonal trust and stabilization can be created before going into deeper – and potentially more momentarily destabilizing – work. It is important for you to make sure that you comfortable working with me. In a first explorative meeting you can find out how you feel with me and I can also see if I am the right person with the appropriate training base to work with you.
I am curious about somatic and equine therapy but have a few questions… What about touch in Somatic Psychotherapy, what will this involve? …And do I have to be an experienced horse rider or at ease with horses do do equine therapy sessions?
More information about these modalities is available in more depth on my website under the relevant tabs. To answer briefly here – Therapy is a safe space and therefore touch -if and when used – will always be conducted in a safe and therapeutic manner. It is not necessary to use physical touch to benefit from a somatic approach. All touch in somatic therapy is both optional and consciously agreed upon between us with a clear therapeutic purpose and intent. This is something that will be discussed and contracted within sessions.
In regards to required proficiency with riding and experience around horses the answer is a straight forward and solid “no, not required”! We will be solely working on the ground, in relationship to the horses, as close or as far away as you feel and are comfortable and safe. Some clients come with a lot of horse experience, some with none, or even a fear of horses. More information can be found on the equine therapy page, and it is also useful to read through the safety guidelines form which I provide to give you some more information.
How do I end therapy?
You are free to make an ending at any time but I ask you to flag this up in time for us to take at least one session to conclude our work together.
